Meet the Board: Treasurer Reg Pullen
Held in September, the session gave members the opportunity to practise CPR and learn how to use a defibrillator, helping build the confidence to act in an emergency.

The evening formed part of a refreshed programme shaped by a member working group. It was inspired by Reading RA member Michael McDonagh, whose quick thinking and use of CPR helped save a life on the pitch. Michael was subsequently named ‘Match Official of the Year’ by The FA.

Alongside the practical training, members heard directly from Michael about his experience and the importance of being ready to step forward when someone needs help.

Ben Atherton, Reading RA’s Welfare Officer, who organised the event, said:

“It was a real pleasure to host an outstanding evening of learning and practical development. With the brilliant volunteers from St John Ambulance, we were trained on CPR and defib application and how to have the confidence to step up and act at the most vital of times. It was also a highlight to interview fellow match official Michael and learn more about his experience putting these skills into use on the pitch.”

Members also learned that the St John Ambulance volunteers came from a wide range of backgrounds, balancing their volunteering with their everyday working lives. It reinforced a key message from the evening: with the right training and a willingness to act, anyone can make a difference.

KaMan Cheung, Lead for West Berkshire St John Ambulance, said:

“It was fantastic to see so many people attend the session and get involved in practising CPR. The enthusiasm and engagement from everyone made it a very rewarding evening for us.”

Members were encouraged to support St John Ambulance with a donation in appreciation of the volunteers’ time and expertise.

The evening combined valuable learning with the camaraderie and mutual support Reading RA aims to build throughout its programme this season. Members unable to attend were encouraged to explore online training, including the British Heart Foundation’s 15-minute RevivR course and the Sudden Cardiac Arrest course on the England Football website.

Our Partnerships

Partnerships are often formed between individuals, agencies or organisations with a shared interest to address specific issues. Our evidence reveals that our members young and old often require mental, emotional, financial, medical help, support and guidance. The Referees’ Association champion the work of those agencies that provide this support in times of need. Should you require support please contact the relevant agency below or the RA Head Office.
